10 Cocktails for an Out-of-this-world Experience

published by Jaison on Feb 14, 2008

Here is a list of 10 drinks that are sure to make you have a great time, no matter where you are.

In my previous post “10 Exotic and Healthy Juice Recipes” some of the readers requested to include the full recipe rather than providing the ingredients alone. The truth is in mixing drinks, there is no strict way to combine ingredients. All the fun lies in a little bit of experimenting. But in this article, I will try to include the proportions as well.

General Guidelines

Do experiment a little with the proportions to suit your taste rather than strictly following the proportions I have mentioned. Try to use fresh ingredients as much as possible especially while mixing fruit juices. You will have to shake the drinks thoroughly but not the carbonated drinks. Last but not the least, drink safe and enjoy.

Martini

It is a cocktail made with gin and dry white vermouth. Sometimes vodka
is substituted for gin is and is common these days. It is often
described as being “crisp” or “astringent”. Over the years, the martini
has become perhaps the most well-known mixed alcoholic beverage.

For a martini add 2 – 6 ounces gin, 1 ounce dry vermouth and pour into a glass (ice optional) with an olive or a twist of lemon. Some prefer substituting vodka for gin to make vodka martini. The Gin should be added depending on your taste (The more gin, the drier it will taste). Stir.

Bloody Mary

A Bloody Mary is a cocktail containing vodka, tomato juice, and usually
other spices or flavorings such as Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce,
beef consomme or bouillon, horseradish, celery, salt, black pepper,
cayenne pepper, lemon juice, and celery salt. It is the official
alcoholic beverage of the Preppy lifestyle according to Lisa Birnbach’s
Official Preppy Handbook from the 1980s.

Add 1 ½ ounce of vodka to 3 ounces tomato juice. Add a little bit of Worcestershire and Tabasco sauce, 1 full lemon juice and pinch of salt, pepper and celery salt. Shake well.

Champagne Cocktail

It is a drink which is around for hundreds of years and has been
featured in many movies. This is a perfect drink for experimenting. Use
your imagination. A standard recipe is given below.

  • Brandy – 1 ounce
  • Sugar – 1 Teaspoon
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Top with Champagne and mix.

Daiquiri

It is a family of cocktails whose main ingredients are rum and lime
juice. There are several versions, but those that gained international
fame are the ones made in the El Floridita bar in Havana, Cuba. Add 1 ½ ounces of rum, one full juice of lime and 1 teaspoon powdered sugar. Add a fruit juice of your choice (strawberry or peach are most commonly used). Add crushed ice for a frozen daiquiri. Shake.

Fuzzy Navel

A fuzzy navel is a popular and easy to make mixed drink made from peach
schnapps and orange juice. Generally an equal amount of each component
is used to concoct it, although quantities may vary. It can also be
made with lemonade or a splash of vodka depending on the drinker’s
taste. The recipe I like the most is given below.

½ ounce peach schnapps with orange juice

Stir.

Long Island Ice Tea

This is another one of those drinks in which you can do lots of
experimentation. A Long Island Iced Tea is a cocktail made with, vodka,
gin, tequila, and rum. A popular variation mixes equal parts vodka,
gin, rum, tequila, and triple sec with 1 1/2 parts sour mix with a
splash of cola. Close variants often replace the sour mix with sweet
and sour mix or with lemon juice, and the cola with actual iced tea.

Stir ½ ounce each rum, triple sec, vodka, tequila and gin and 2 splash margarita sour mix

Serve over ice and top with coke (or ice cream to make a Long Beach).

Stir.

Mai Tai

“Maita’i” is the Tahitian word for “good.” But it is popularly called
Mai Tai. It is a well-known alcoholic cocktail purportedly invented at
a Polynesian-style restaurant in Oakland, California in 1944

First mix two ounces of rum with 1 ounce curacaos and ½ ounce each grenadine and almond syrup. Add half portion of lemon juice and 1 Teaspoon of sugar.

Shake over crushed ice.

Manhattan

A Manhattan is a cocktail made with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and
bitters. Commonly used whiskeys include rye (the traditional choice),
Canadian, bourbon and Tennessee. Proportions of whiskey to vermouth
vary, from a very sweet 1:1 ratio to a much less sweet 4:1 ratio. The
cocktail is often stirred with ice and strained into a cocktail glass,
where it is garnished with a Maraschino cherry with a stem.

One of the popular variants is prepared by one and half ounces of whiskey ¼ ounce sweet vermouth and a dash of Angostura Bitters with maraschino cherry (optional).

Stir in ice.

Margarita

The Margarita is the most common of tequila-based cocktails, made with
Triple Sec or other orange-flavored liqueurs, and lime or lemon juice,
often served with salt on the glass rim. Silver or blanco tequilas are
preferred for margaritas, though some will use reposados or “gold”
tequilas.

Mix 1 ½ ounce of tequila (according your choice) with half ounce triple sec and half lime juice. Pour with ice in salt-rimmed glass or add crushed ice for a frozen margarita

Shake.

Singapore Sling

The Singapore Sling is a cocktail that was invented by Ngiam Tong Boon
for the Raffles Hotel in Singapore sometime between 1910 and 1915. The
initial recipy is significantly different from the current recipes.

One popular version is made by mixing two ounces of gin, 1 ½ ounce cherry brandy , half lemon juice and 1 Teaspoon powdered sugar. Pour over ice and top with seltzer water.

Shake.

Side Note

There are lots of guide books on cocktail recipes and other alcoholic drinks. As i said earlier, lots of people have experimented with the versions and might have come up with their own recipes. Try to find out the correct balance which is perfect for you.
